From the recording Pocket Hang Glider

We had a tradition in our family of traveling to Moab Utah camping on Thanksgiving. We would usually make turkey enchiladas with red chili sauce and bring our mountain bikes. I always had a gig around this time and would drive separately back to New Mexico before the family did. On one such journey I felt compelled to capture the feeling of returning home to New Mexico. It is difficult to describe the depth of the warmth that surrounds upon return. Its kind of like a horse with a compass that always knows it's way back to the stable. That's how it feels.

Lyrics

New Mexico Bound

I said farewell to the La Sals and I shifted my direction
Towards an invisible gateway opposite the arches
A late storm in the mountains forced the elk down to the cross road
So I proceeded with caution back to my abode

Passed the windmills of Monticello, flocks of birds and shafts of light
Snowy capped mountains standing tall and bright
And nothing beats the feeling of being New Mexico bound
Well nothing beats the feeling of being New Mexico bound
My heart knows where it travels it trembles and it pounds
When I’m New Mexico bound

Utah is a wonder, Colorado is for horses
New Mexico is for hermits and unexplained forces
In the blood of Christ mountains we made babies one and two
And they both know the way blindfolded back to you

Passed the windmills of Monticello, flocks of birds and shafts of light
Snowy capped mountains standing tall and bright
And nothing beats the feeling of being New Mexico bound
Well nothing beats the feeling of being New Mexico bound
My heart knows where it travels it trembles and it pounds
When I’m New Mexico bound

No sweeter piece of earth have I ever known
Bury me in Ponderosa without a head stone
Place a sopaipilla underneath my tired head
With a little bit of honey by an old elk shed

Passed the windmills of Monticello, flocks of birds and shafts of light
Snowy capped mountains standing tall and bright
And nothing beats the feeling of being New Mexico bound
Well nothing beats the feeling of being New Mexico bound
My heart knows where it travels and it doesn’t touch the ground
When I’m New Mexico, when I’m New Mexico, when I’m New Mexico bound
